Why this campaign, from the founder

I was that child.

I was born in Liberia. And when I was eleven years old, my parents died.

I don't say that for pity. I say it because I need you to understand where this story begins. At eleven, I was a boy with no father to teach him, no mother to feed him, and no plan for how tomorrow was going to work. In Liberia, that is not a story with a good ending. Most children in my situation disappear.

But I did not disappear. And the only reason I did not disappear is because people I did not know, who owed me nothing, chose to see me. They fed me. They put me in a classroom. They spoke life over a boy who had every reason to believe his story was already over.

Those people were the hands of God. And they carried me long enough for me to grow into the man writing this today.

Now I am an electrician in Seattle. I am married ten years. And I run Empower Young Minds because somewhere in Liberia right now there is an eleven-year-old boy standing exactly where I once stood — waiting to see whether anyone will be the hands of God for him the way strangers were for me.

Will you be that stranger for 200 more?

This is what your $200 becomes, twenty years later. A husband. A father of three. A man who never forgot the strangers who put him in school. Your gift writes this ending for one more child.
What $200 provides

One year. Head to toe. Heart to hand.

  • Full-year school tuition. A seat in a classroom. A teacher who knows her name.
  • School uniform. Because dignity walks in with the child.
  • A pair of shoes. No child should learn barefoot.
  • Textbooks and school supplies. The tools of every day.
  • A backpack. Her school, on her shoulders.
  • A personal Bible. Because the education is not complete without the anchor.

"Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it."

— Proverbs 22:6
